(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Johnson Administration officials say officials in Texas and elsewhere are accelerating the number of asylum seekers they are sending to Chicago.

Even so, the mayor is reducing funding in the next budget for sheltering the new arrivals.

At last report, Chicago is sheltering nearly 11,000 migrants. About 3,000 are at police stations, and 3,700 are awaiting placement in permanent housing.

Mayor Johnson's proposed city budget has lowered the amount of money being allocated for the new arrivals.

Deputy Mayoral Chief of Staff Cristina Pacione-Zayas says that's an indication that help must come from the state and federal governments because Chicago cannot bear the entire burden alone.
