CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Niles police chief said an investigation refutes claims by a former sergeant of a cover-up in how the department handled a call involving one of its civilian employees.
Chief Luis Tigera said the former sergeant, Nick Beyer, began his own investigation into a February wellbeing check the day after officers responded that included taking information from a department system without authorization. But Beyer didn’t say anything for almost a month.
“So the question is, why did he hold on to it? Once we knew about it, we acted. We opened up an investigation. We investigated it and we saw that it was unfounded,” Tigera said during a Monday press conference.
Beyer resigned this month ahead of a disciplinary hearing after he was accused of insubordination.
Beyer told WBBM accusations raised against him are pure retaliation from a police chief who’s been a career administrator and has created an extremely toxic environment.
Beyer said he plans to file a whistleblower lawsuit this week in the hopes of getting justice for what he’s been through.
Two other officers in the department resigned this spring after the department found they violated policy.
