CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents of a Chicago Housing Authority high-rise in the South Lawndale neighborhood have been living in cold apartments after pipes burst and the heat went out on Sunday.
Residents of the 200 unit Albany Terrace Apartments on 21st Place have been doing what they can to keep warm.
"We're going through hell," said resident Rosemary Coleman. "It is freezing."
Rosemary Coleman told CBS 2 she’s using a potentially dangerous method to get some warmth.
"When you have to burn your oven and the eyes on your stove to get your apartment warm, it's bad," she said.
She’s not the only one though.
"If we didn't have our ovens on and our eyes running on our stove – yes, we know it's dangerous," said resident Charles Odum. "But what can we do?"
The fire department and People’s Gas warn against using ovens and stove-tops like this.
The CHA said the heat has been fixed, but some apartments may be cold.
