(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A suburban school community will be focusing on conversations about race after an incident Friday that school officials are now calling a hate crime.

Police in Evanston are investigating after three nooses were found hanging from trees between Haven Middle School and Kingsley Elementary School. District 65 Superintendent Dr. Devin Horton called it a hate crime in a letter to the school community and directed parents to the District 65 website for suggested approaches on holding conversations about race.

"It resounds with a tone of hate and hurt that will impact members of our entire community, namely Black and African American students, staff, and families who have experienced generations of harm," he wrote.

Horton also said that extra in- person mental health resources will be made available Monday. He added that students were reported seeing chanting and carrying ropes to where the nooses were found.

A large group of students had been holding a protest at Haven over the transfer of several teachers to other schools.
