(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One of the Northwestern University students who came down with norovirus after eating at Big Wig Tacos and Burritos said he ended up in the emergency room.
Micah Sandy was among those who took advantage of $1 burritos at Big Wig Tacos and Burritos, located near campus.
“Normally I get dining hall food,” said Sandy. “But I thought that normally, those burritos are over 10 bucks — so I'd treat myself for the one day.”
And he regretted it, he told CBS 2.
“I felt sick, and it just worsened,” he said. “I ended up going to immediate care — the student health center — which is where I found out I was the fifth person they saw with stomach-related issues.”
According to the health department, those illnesses were tied to the restaurant.
He ended up in the ER. University of Illinois Chicago epidemiologist Dr. Katrine Wallace explained how norovirus is spread.
“Someone with norovirus uses their bare hands, unwashed, to prepare food,” Wallace said.
In a statement, Big Wig Tacos and Burritos said it is “not certain” that the norovirus outbreak originated at the restaurant.
“Nevertheless, we are taking immediate and comprehensive measures to address the situation,” Big Wig officials said.
