A Northwest Side non-profit continues gathering essential supplies for shipment to Ukraine.
"We are looking for bulletproof vests. They can be new; they can be used. We are taking both," said Kamila Sumelka Executive Director at the Copernicus Foundation in Jefferson Park.
Sumelka told WBBM that until a few weeks ago, the non-profit had no previous ties with Ukraine.
"No, this is just like the whole world, watching the injustice and everything that's happening there. We just feel, you know, just human beings, that we need to help and do something," she said.
Sumelka says the foundation is now in the process of gathering life preserving bulletproof vests for a third shipment overseas, not only for Ukrainian defenders, but for civilians sheltering or attempting to flee.
"First one was 30 to 40 vests, but also helmets and trauma kits and first aid kits," she said. "Second shipment that went out this week, that was 140 bulletproof vests."
The Copernicus Center at 216 West Lawrence is open seven days a week.
