Governor Pritzker's "Building Up Illinois Developments" or "BUILD" plan aims to lower housing costs by cutting the red tape around development, making it easier to build homes state-wide.
However, several leaders in the Barrington region say the plan would undermine local government and the character of their communities.
The measure would establish a state-wide zoning law aimed at addressing "affordability" and the housing shortage in Illinois.
State Rep. Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills) who hosted a press conference Thursday with local mayors, says the one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work for everyone and doesn't solve doesn’t solve affordability."
In a statement he says "What it does do is it violates zoning, which is a sacrosanct rule to protect all homeowners, businesses, and families.”
The group says the measure would increase safety concerns, having already limited resources and would reduce municipal oversight over residential construction.
Governor Pritzker introduced the measure in his State of the State address saying often bureaucratic red tape can increase costs, delay construction and sometimes kill building projects all together.
The governor is also planning to put state money behind the effort, adding more than $250 million in funding.
