EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwestern University is the latest to join a network of universities in their effort to empower students from rural areas in the college application process.
The Small Town and Rural Students, or STARS, Network aims to create new pathways to college for students in the U.S. who might not recognize the full range of educational opportunities available to them.
Part of the effort includes pipeline programs that bring students from rural communities and small towns to campus over summer break to help them prepare for college.
STARS is also teaming up with Khan Academy and the non-profit tutoring platform Schoolhouse to offer a free, online math curriculum and peer tutoring for students in small towns and rural communities.
