CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nurses at Northwestern Memorial Hospital pulled together a last-minute wedding ceremony for a patient who wanted to tie the knot before undergoing open heart surgery.

It may not have been the wedding that 33-year-old Annesley Clark and their partner Christine Corso expected, but Clark said it was important for the two to make it official before their high-risk operation.

“Having the opportunity to tell Christine, my person, that they mean what they do to me in front of the people that we love the most, allows me to go into tomorrow and the rest of this recovery feeling settled and grounded and safe,” Clark said ahead of the ceremony.

Clark and Corso had to move up their wedding date due to a life-threatening infection and a mass growing on Clark's heart, which had to be removed as soon as possible.

So, the day before Clark's surgery, the Northwestern Medicine nursing staff transformed the hospital waiting room into a wedding venue with balloons, decorations, flowers, and a makeshift altar.

“I know that recovery isn't going to be super fast but I hope that it's done properly and that I rock it, and I get to go enter this chapter of my life with Christine as soon as possible,” they said.

Clark and Corso were married on Oct. 9, 2024. Clark’s surgery went successfully, and the two newlyweds said they're looking forward to their first holiday season as a married couple.
