EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwestern University’s plan to build a new Ryan Field and host concerts there was advanced Monday night by the Evanston City Council in a meeting that lasted eight hours.

The Village President in neighboring Wilmette, Senta Plunkett, was among many who spoke against concerts and other events during three hours of public comment.

"Wilmette remains steadfast in its opposition to any number of concerts in the middle of a residential neighborhood," she stated.

There were some comments in support, as well.

"The benefits vastly outweigh the harm," said Evanston resident Mark Abrahmson.

The city council members were tied 4-to-4 on advancing the concert proposal. Mayor Daniel Biss broke the tie, voting in favor of concerts.

This came after Northwestern sweetened the pot, offering $100 million in community benefits. A final vote is a couple weeks away.
