Things to do in Chicago this weekend

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Tis getting to be the season when holiday events are plentiful. WBBM Newsradio’s Rachel Pierson has the latest roundup of weekend events.

–Watch Chicago's Christmas Ship ceremony Saturday morning and take a tour of the upper deck of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw at Navy Pier. The ship's return continues a long running tradition, bringing holiday cheer to more than a thousand families who receive a free Christmas tree.

–It’s officially holiday shopping season, and you’ll find plenty of picks during Winterglow at The Salt Shed. The indoor winter market features gifts, jewelry, vintage clothes plus a cold-weather beer garden and s’more kits to indulge in while you sit by the riverfront fire pits.

–The Joffrey Ballet’s critically acclaimed reimagined classic, The Nutcracker, takes the stage at Chicago’s historic Lyric Opera House this weekend. The new staging resets the action among the glitz and glamour of the 1893 World's Fair.

–A timeless tradition returns to La Grange. Saturday evening’s Holiday Walk includes ice sculptures, Christmas carolers, pony rides and Santa himself arriving at the La Grange Village Hall by firetruck. While you’re there, don’t forget to take the trolley and visit open houses at local businesses.

–GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago hosts its 8th annual Dance-A-Thon Sunday afternoon at Wicker Park Lutheran Church. The fundraising event doubles as an end-of-year party featuring a DJ, dancing, cookie decorating and even a live performance by an Elvis impersonator.

–The Wicker Park Farmers Market returns for its outdoor season starting this weekend at The Robey on North Avenue. Popular vendors show off their wares at the indoor market, which is open on select Sundays through April.
