Northwest Indiana is getting ready to welcome 2026 with its traditional pierogi drop.

This is the 10th year the Whiting Knights of Columbus Council has been counting down with a pierogi but things have changed a little.

Organizer Andy Dybel says they switched from a crane to a 50-foot flag pole to drop an illuminated plywood and foam board pierogi into a cauldron.

He says they are ready to celebrate starting at 8pm out in the street with fireworks, live music, food and drink or inside the K of C Hall across the street.

“We’re pretty confident it’s going to be pretty comfortable out there for December 31st in Chicagoland. People in Chicago are pretty hearty.”

Revelers often come in costume and Dybel says they’re still looking for someone to dress up as Baby New Year.

The celebration, which he estimates draws about 1,500 people, was recently named the top New Year’s Eve drop in the country by USA Today.
