(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 10-year-old from Oak park is pushing the pedal toward the national go kart finals.
After becoming the K1 Junior League state champion in Illinois, fifth grader Pierce Joy punched his ticket to compete in the national championship in California.
Pierce's mother Kerri could not be more proud.
"We're just excited to see where this could potentially take him," she said. "To go — in the first year of really doing this league — to win the league and then to go on and win the state championship and now be heading to California for nationals is, I think, no small feat for a 10-year-old."
Kerri said her son has always felt the need for speed.
"He does do other sports. He's played baseball a little bit, soccer, but I would say he's always, since he's been really young, even at the age of 2, he's really taken quite a liking to cars."
Next up for Pierce: the National Championship, this April, in Ontario, Calif.
If he wins there, the World Championship competition is around the corner.
