OAK PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A woman is in critical condition and about a dozen other people are displaced after a fire at a west suburban apartment building.
The Oak Park Fire Department said the fire started just before 3 a.m. on a back porch of a 33-unit apartment building in the 200 block of S. Maple Avenue.
Video on social media showed a back stairwell engulfed in flames.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to that area, and, while checking apartments, found a 69-year-old woman suffering from smoke inhalation in one unit.
She was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition. A firefighter/paramedic was also treated for a minor hand injury.
The Red Cross was brought in to help 11 people displaced after seven units were deemed uninhabitable.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
