OAK PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Oak Park church has taken in migrants who had been living outside a nearby Chicago Police station.
The move to Oak Park came after a volunteer assisting the migrants at the nearby 15th District station in Chicago became concerned about the welfare of the migrants, sleeping in tents in the cold.
Some were moved to the Oak Park police station, which can't accommodate many.
A village official called the pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rev. Kathy Nolte, and she agreed to take in about 100.
She told CBS 2 the basement of her church is now at capacity.
"More churches need to be opening up their basements to figure out what we're going to do," Nolte said.
Volunteer Jori Salazar helped the migrants bring their belongings to the church. "I don't like to see people go through this," Salazar said.
People have been donation coats and gloves and other supplies.
