CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hundreds more young people in Chicago will have access to healthy meals, thanks to former president Barack Obama.
The Obama foundation is a major backer of the Local Lunchbox program, which provides culturally-relevant food from local chefs to young people.
It started as a pilot program in 2022 to serve young people on the South Side. Now, Local Lunchbox will expand to serve children on the West Side, as well.
The organizations will provide free breakfast and lunch to anyone 18 and under at three YMCA locations in Chicago.
Local Lunchbox will be providing meals at the South Side YMCA at 63rd Street and Stony Island Avenue. On the West Side, lunch giveaways will take place at the Rauner Family YMCA at 27th Street and Western Avenue. The Kelly Hall YMCA at 824 N. Hamlin Ave., in Humboldt Park, will also host Local Lunchbox.
Distribution will run through mid-August.
