CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An off-duty Chicago police officer fired his gun during an attempted carjacking in the Wrightwood neighborhood Sunday night.
Chicago police said the off-duty officer fired shots near 79th and Sacramento during the attempted carjacking shortly before 11 p.m.
The department did not share how many suspects were involved but said no one was injured and no one is in custody.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating.
Department statistics show motor vehicle thefts in that area, which is the 8th District, have exploded with more than 1,900 so far this year, an 84% increase over last year. Earlier this December, police reported 34 such crimes occurred in one week.
