CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago police officer and another person was killed in an apparent exchange of gunfire Thursday evening in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. near the intersection of Avers Avenue and Ferdinand Street, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford and police radio transmissions.

The wounded officer was rushed to Stroger Hospital and treated for a gunshot wound that wasn’t thought to be life threatening, Langford said. Four other officers who weren’t shot were hospitalized for observation, police said.

The other person, a man in his 20's, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The gunfight happened after two police vehicles tried to conduct a traffic stop, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source. Several officers fired their weapons, and the other person’s gun was apparently emptied.

More than 50 rounds were picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system, according to records shared with the Sun-Times.

Parts of the shooting were captured during frantic police radio transmissions. “Shots fired,” an officer screamed. “I’m shot! I’m shot!”

“We have an officer shot in the arm,” a dispatcher radioed minutes later. “They have a tourniquet applied.”

Police Supt. Larry Snelling addressed the shooting at a meeting of the Chicago Police Board later Thursday, saying he hopes the officer makes “a speedy recovery.”

“They are out there working hard, trying to keep the streets safe, and as a result of that was injured,” Snelling said. “But the officer, it sounds like, will be okay.”

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information should call (312) 746-3609.
