(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Aurora’s mayor and the Kane County sheriff argued over how law enforcement handled a sting operation the day before a deadly shooting.
At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Richard Irvin called on Sheriff Ron Hain to apologize for saying Aurora Police were being reactive instead of proactive in their undercover operation. The mayor said their operations were compromised by deputies acting on Hain’s orders.
“The mistake that caused the unfortunate loss of life was his and his alone and he ought to accept the responsibility for, instead of interjecting misplaced and unsubstantiated conjecture.”
A year ago, Jim Moriarty died in a shooting with deputies after the Kane County Sheriff’s Office says the 38-year-old carjacked a woman at gunpoint.
The Sun-Times reports the night before the deadly shooting, deputies interrupted an undercover sting by Aurora Police outside the man’s apartment.
“Common sense should have dictated he let our officers handle the operation that was already in progress inside the city of Aurora corporate limits, where Aurora police have ultimate jurisdiction,” Irvin said.
Hain issued a statement responding to the mayor’s comments.
“Yes, his comments were reckless and uninformed. We have an unblemished record here at KCSO. We towed the vehicle pursuant to our investigation and stand behind that choice. They can promulgate all they want.”
The Sun-Times reports Moriarity’s relatives say he was suffering a mental health crisis. The case is still under investigation.
