Officials find miscounting in those vaccinated, unvaccinated in U.S.; Illinois finds 540,000 more unvaccinated than first thought

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officials warn there are many more people unvaccinated in the United States than first believed, due to a miscount of who got which doses of vaccine.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows 240 million people with at least one dose, but only 203 million are fully vaccinated.

According to Bloomberg, state and local officials said it’s not likely that 37 million Americans got one shot without completing the shot cycle. Instead, they said, and the CDC now agrees with, the government had incorrectly counted booster shots and second doses as first doses.

This means both the fully vaccinated and completely unvaccinated are officially undercounted, with the precise numbers unknown.

Illinois is one of at least three states where miscounting has happened, and through an audit, the state found it had 540,000 more completely unvaccinated people than first thought. But on the other hand, the audit also found 730,000 people who were fully vaccinated and had not been counted.

President Biden has warned that the unvaccinated are "looking at a winter of severe illness and death."
