(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officials are trying to reassure residents in LaSalle the day after an explosion and fire at a chemical plant there.

EPA On-Scene Coordinator Robert Kondreck said regulators have been sampling the air from multiple locations around the plant since the fire at the Carus Chemical facility. Potassium permanganate was released from the event.

Company Vice President of Operations Allen said residents should use water to rinse off any of the substance that has fallen onto their property.
The company is offering free car wash tokens to residents.

Carus also has set up a hotline for the public at 815-224-6662.

The state fire marshal hasn’t determined the cause yet but says it does not appear to be suspicious. One local firefighter was injured.

The plant manufactures water treatment and pollution-control chemicals.
