(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some O'Hare Airport workers gathered at Chicago City Hall Wednesday to declare the city is not yet ready for NASCAR because of understaffing.

UNITE HERE Local 1, which represents food service workers at O'Hare, organized the appearance at City Hall. Justin Graham-Castillo, a cook, said O'Hare won't be able to handle the crowds likely to descend on the city to see the NASCAR Chicago Street Race next weekend.

He said there was so-much understaffing and overworked employees over the Memorial Day weekend that it is clear the facilities can't handle the influx of NASCAR fans.

He says people don't want to work for HMS Host because of low pay and the workload. He wants alderpersons to help them prod the employer to make improvements.

For now, labor advocates say, one-hour waits for food at sit-down restaurants at O'Hare and angry customers may remain typical.
