(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While some parents are pushing for no masks and fewer restrictions on kindergarten through 12th grade students this fall, others are looking for alternatives to returning to the classroom.

Sarah Myers says she’s glad Gov. JB Pritzker is requiring masks for all students and teachers but the mandate wasn’t enough to change her mind.

The North Park mother has pulled her kids from Peterson Elementary and is enrolling them in Pearson Online Academy, citing concerns about the Delta variant.

Her plan is that they’ll be remote for at least the first semester. She hopes the nine and ten-year-old children will be able to get vaccinated before the second half of the year.

Myers says she’s worried about the families who can’t afford private school and whose kids are too young to be vaccinated at this point.

Since the Illinois State Board of Education required in-person learning this fall, CPS is only offering its Virtual Academy to “medically fragile” students.

Myers says since posting about her decision, she’s heard from several other parents considering pulling their children from CPS.
