CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police have issued an alert for local businesses after a string of armed robberies at sandwich shops and restaurants.
Police said a lone offender is wanted in eight armed robberies that date back to late June. In each robbery, officials said the suspect went behind the counter of the business and either held up the employees at gunpoint or emptied out the cash register themselves.
In one of the robberies, police said the suspect became aggressive and struck a victim in the side of the face.
The alert was for businesses in the 1st, 11th, 12th, 14th and 18th Chicago Police Districts, which includes neighborhoods near downtown, on the West Side, the Near Northwest Side, the Near North Side, as well as Pilsen and Chinatown.
Of the eight robberies, four of them took place between 3:30 – 4:30 a.m. Three others took place between 9 a.m. and noon, and another robbery took place just before 10:30 p.m.
Chicago police said business owners should make sure their establishment is equipped with a working surveillance system.
Area Three detectives are investigating.
