Go with the 'contraflow': One-way Chicago street becomes two-way for bicycles

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's been in the planning stage since at least 2019,a nd now the Dickens Greenway is finished on the North Side, giving bicyclists a “contra-flow” bike lane.

This means that the mostly one-way-for-cars Dickens Avenue is two-way for bicyclists, making use of the relatively wide street.

In one of its initial studies for a Dickens Greenway, the Chicago Department of Transportation found that one third to one half of the bicyclists on Dickens were riding against the westbound automobile traffic.

People on bikes now have a designated lane, painted on the pavement.

Plus, there are raised crosswalks and curb extensions, and the speed limit has been lowered from 30 miles an hour to 20.
