(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This isn't just a big travel week for the airlines. The Illinois Toll Highway Authority expects a lot of people to be hitting the roads over the next three days too.
Illinois Tollway officials said they expect many of the system's 294 miles of roadways across 12 Northern Illinois counties to be quite busy and spokesman Dan Rozek can't really say what the busiest day will be.
"Honestly, we expect it to be spread equally heavy on each of those three days-Wednesday, Thursday and Friday," he added.
"We expect about 1.7 million vehicles each day. We tend to see people leaving at different times to reach their destination, so all those days before the weekend are expected to be the busiest."
Rozen said Christmas Day will be the least busy, but still there will likely be a million cars on the roads.
However, it’s encouraging that no big storms are predicted for the big weekend, which makes for better, safer travel for drivers and passengers and will make it easier for the tollway to keep the roads open and moving.
