CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This week’s Made in Chicago highlights an Andersonville shop that’s turned a hobby into an entire store.
“It's been crazy,” said Alex Jones. “We were just collecting, and now we're able to do the things that we love and actually have a space for it.”
Jones owns Fad2Fresh in Andersonville. She opted to open the shot part-time after scouring thrift shops around the area with her girlfriend and picking up all types of cool collectibles. Shortly after opening, though, Jones was laid off from her main gig.
“I was like, 'Wow, I guess I'm doing Fad2Fresh full-time now,’” she told WBBM.
Since then, it's become what many call an Andersonville staple, and it offers visitors everything from unique t-shirts and records to baby clothes and glassware.
Jones, though, said it's much more than a vintage shop.
“Even if you don't buy anything, I want you to have that experience of, ‘I love that place; she's nice; the vibe is great,’” Jones said.
That vibe is highlighted by the cozy couch, music and free snacks.
Jones also works to find ways to pay tribute to those who came before her.
“I hold it so dear to me because I feel like it's not common — and it should be common — for black, queer, women owned businesses to thrive,” Jones said.
She said customers can shop Fad2Fresh in Andersonville and online.
“Just bringing community is really important to me,” Jones said. “Even though it's just a shop that has a bunch of vintage things inside of it, I want it to be welcoming for everyone.”
