Pair rescued from burning boat on Lake Michigan in far northern suburbs

WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A boat explosion on Lake Michigan Tuesday led to a rescue in the far north suburbs.

The U.S. Coast Guard said a call came in about an apparent explosion on a boat near Waukegan around 2:45 p.m., but it was a Good Samaritan that got to the two people on the boat first.

The two boaters, a 46-year-old man and 55-year-old man, were transported to a local hospital in serious condition, suffering burns and smoke inhalation.

Heavy flames and a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from the boat for nearly an hour after the initial call came in.

The Coast Guard said there was no evidence of any pollution from the burning boat, but that salvage crews and pollution responders are monitoring the situation.

There is no word yet on the cause.
