CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fire caused extensive damage to the Palace Grill on Chicago's Near West side Thursday night.
The Place Grill is something of an institution on Madison Street, across the street from the 911 Center and just east of the United Center.
It's popular with Blackhawks fans and some players, among many others.
The fire broke out around 10 p.m. The restaurant was closed.
Owner George Lemperis spoke to CBS 2.
"This was not a small fire. This is a really sad day. This is a really sad day," Lemperis said.
A spokesman for the fire department, Larry Langford, said the fire started in the kitchen – a grease fire - and was put out relatively quickly.
He said a hole was cut in the roof and an extensive amount of water was used. He added that there's an extensive amount of damage to the kitchen.
The Palace Grill has been in business since 1938.
