PALATINE, Ill, (WBBM NEWSRADIO)-- Some Palatine residents can expect better water pressure as the northwest suburb prepares to remove a water tank.
The 150,000-gallon water tank that stands above the area of Hicks and Dundee Roads is coming down after a vote by the Palatine Infrastructure and Environment Committee.
The village awarded a roughly $45,000 contract to Alpine Demolition based in St. Charles. The first elevated water tank deemed obsolete by a water study in 2010 study was removed at a cost of $25,760, according to the Daily Herald.
Village Public Works Director Matt Barry said this tank is larger and has more support columns and told the village council that its removal should improve the flow of water for residents in the area and firefighters.
"This is one of the last major improvements that are needed to switch our pressure zone within the village," he said to the committee.
Before Alpine Demolition dismantles the tank and recycles its 100 tons of steel, the village will move the telecommunications systems currently on top of it.
