Pandemic burnout may push medical professionals to find another field

CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) -- The pandemic has led about one out of three medical professionals to consider leaving medicine, according to a poll by the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Dr. John Preston Erwin, the chair of medicine at North Shore University Health System, said the stresses caused by the pandemic and caring for patients are bad enough.

He says another part of the problem is the changing attitudes among patients.

“Early on in the pandemic, our patients were very gracious toward us in terms of understanding we were going in the line of fire and front lines, with all the unknowns. But of late, I think the whole world is stressed, and so people are very demanding of ‘right here, right now’ timing on everything that is happening.”

Erwin said another issue is the amount of bureaucracy and paperwork medical professionals face.

That takes away time from patient care and limits the time medical professionals have for themselves to cope, he said.
