(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Should there be more rules regulating the outside income of Chicago alders?
That was the subject of a hearing Thursday as the Committee on Ethics and Government Oversight met at City Hall.
Ald. Nicholas Sposato, 38th, said that not allowing City Council members to do any other outside work whatsoever would be a mistake. Also, he said, alders who work upwards of 60 hours a week responding to constituents are not making much of an hourly income.
Others said it can be a plus to have elected officials who have experience in other fields.
The lowest-paid members of the Chicago City Council make about $118,000 a year.
Steve Berlin, the executive director of the city’s Board of Ethics, said council members are obligated once a year to report any outside income that exceeds $1,000. He suggested it may be a good idea to have alders file disclosures more frequently.
