Parents call on District 54 to defy mask mandate

Two students wearing face masks board a school bus

SCHAUMBURG (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hours after Governor Pritzker issued his mask-wearing order for schools in Illinois, a northwest suburban school board heard from parents who were passionate about the issue.

Although a majority of the 22 comments sent electronically before the Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 school board meeting favored mask-wearing in schools, those who attended the meeting were not.

One after another, parents pleaded and demanded that the District 54 school board ignore Governor Pritzker’s mask mandate and make mask-wearing in schools optional.

"When you are tell us to wear a mask and get vaccinated, you are committing fraud," said parent Mariola Marcinkiewicz.

Another parent was even more passionate about the issue.

"How come you can have a Lollapalooza and 400,000 people with no masks and two days later, Pritzker says 'masks on'. Isn’t that hypocritical?!" the parent yelled.

On the same note, parent Susan Goldwater said "I don’t understand why Pritzker all of a sudden said we have to mask up...after Lollapalooza and he got his money."

A couple of students spoke about how they don’t like wearing masks and argued that they don’t protect from COVID-19.

Student Kaya Kernat said she doesn’t like wearing masks and won’t when she’s in school.

"It is disgusting. Putting a facemask on yourself for people not even being able to see half of your face is horrible," she said.

One parent called for a recall of the school board.
