CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is now investigating after a 24 year old man was fatally shot by Chicago Police this morning on Flournoy near Pulaski on the West Side.

The man was identified by family members to the Chicago Tribune as Reginald Clay Jr., 24.

Chicago police said 11th District officers were patrolling the 3800 block of West Flournoy Street at approximately 10 a.m. when they observed several people standing near a vehicle.

At a press conference CPD Deputy Chief Rahman Muhammad told reporters that officers had been in the area on a “gang de-escalation mission,” following another fatal shooting that happened nearby last week.

Muhammad said the officers approached the group as “a protective measure to see what the individuals were doing, not that they were doing anything to begin with."

As the officers approached, Clay Jr., who they say was seen leaning into the vehicle, started running.

The officers took chase and one officer opened fire when Clay Jr. allegedly turned toward them with a gun.

Aid was rendered at the scene, but he soon after died at an area hospital.

No police officers were hurt and all officers involved in the incident are being placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

The officer who opened fire was taken to a hospital for observation. Police said a firearm was recovered on the scene.
