(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department confirmed that a person of interest is in custody in connection with the shooting death of a child on the Near West Side earlier this week. On Friday evening, police confirmed that charges will be announced.
Thursday evening, a Chicago police spokesperson said that a person of interest was taken into custody in connection to the deadly shooting of Jai’Mani Amir Rivera.
Rivera was shot in the chest on Tuesday while he was walking from his apartment to visit a neighbor. Police do not believe that Rivera was the target of the shooting.
On Wednesday, the community gathered to hold a balloon launch to remember Rivera.
“We need justice for my nephew. He was a very outgoing kid, only seven, about to start football this season. He got his number he wanted, he got his jersey,” his aunt Vanessa Rivera said.
Area three detectives are continuing to investigate.
