CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Animal rights activists from the University of Illinois at Chicago grilled a fake dog on Michigan Avenue Saturday in an attempt to shock people shopping near the Chicago Water Tower.

A realistic dog prop was placed on a grill to make people think twice about the meat they consume.

"We're hoping they think about their Labor Day celebration, what they're picking up at the grocery store and make them think what they're actually paying for. They're paying for a sentient being to be killed for their tastebuds," Ismael Perez, an intern with PETA who led the protest, told WBBM Newsradio.

Perez and other UIC students are involved in the group Students Opposing Speciesism. SOS is a movement sponsored by PETA that wants to challenge the idea that some animals are acceptable to eat and others aren't.
