One of the richest women in the world is on another donation spree, and that’s good news for City Colleges of Chicago.

As part of a round of nearly $3 billion in charitable giving, MacKenzie Scott is donating $5 million to Chicago’s Kennedy-King College.

“It was an extreme surprise to both our college and our district,” said Eddie Phillips, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at the South Side college. “This is the single largest donation that we’ve received as a college and as a district of seven colleges. It’s a pretty significant gift from Ms. Scott.”

Phillips called the donation “a true gamechanger.”

“One of the barriers for many of our students is an issue of financial support and having the financial means to cover the costs of their education. I’m pretty sure that we will absolutely prioritize that need, which has posed a significant barrier for many of our students.”

Scott, the billionaire philanthropist who divorced from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is also donating $40 million to the University of Illinois Chicago, which officials say will be used to create a Student Success Fund.

Also, Harper College in Palatine is getting $18 million.

The unrestricted gift is the largest in Harper college’s 54-year history, officials said.
