Pierogi Fest returns to Whiting this summer

WHITING, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of the most popular festivals in the Midwest, Pierogi Fest, in Whiting, will be back this summer after being called off last year due to the pandemic.

Pierogi Fest, the celebration of Northwest Indiana’s Eastern European heritage, sometimes called The Wackiest Fest in the Midwest, returns July 23-25 on 119th Street in Whiting, with a few COVID-related changes, but the organizers promise all of the food, fun, and silliness.

For the uninitiated, this is more than a food festival.

Cooking shows hosted by the ladies known as the "Buscias" (polish name for grandmother), in housecoats and rollers under their scarves, have people in tears.

This from a previous Pierogi Fest:

Reporter: You are the buscias?

"We are the buscias"

Reporter: So how much fun is this every year?

"It's too much fun. Too much fun..."

Other big draws are Mr. Pierogi and Miss Paczki.

The celebration draws about 300,000 visitors and is consistently listed as the favorite festival by area residents.
