(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The latest attempt to build a third Chicago-area airport is now in the governor’s hands.
The Illinois Senate Wednesday sent him a bill requiring the Illinois Department of Transportation to begin a pre-qualifying process to lead to a public-private agreement for a cargo facility at Peotone.
“For far too long, the Southland has been deemed a place where there is no economic opportunity, no development, and no care from the state of Illinois,” said the sponsor, State Sen. Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey). “This is an opportunity for IDOT and the state of Illinois to say the Southland is open for business.”
One opponent said the Will County Board and environmentalists do not want the airport. Another said with the airports already operating in the state, there’s no demand for a cargo airport at Peotone.
