(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Invasive, poisonous hemlock is blooming — and prompting a new warning.
Poison hemlock suddenly seems to be everywhere, says Dan Shaver of the Indiana Natural Resources Conservation Service.
It looks like a giant version of Queen Anne’s lace — 6 feet or taller, and the leaves look like parsley. The stem is bigger, with purple spots.
Once imported from Europe, hemlock is now everywhere in the United States. Shaver told USA Today it’s a scary situation because the plant is very toxic and not something you want in your yard or in the local park.
He’s concerned that children or pets could come into contact with it.
People should wear protection if they handle hemlock — gloves, goggles and long shirts and pants.
