(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There will be a lot of eyes watching the elections of Chicago’s first-ever Police District Councils. It may be a bit of a tug-of-war.
The plan is for three people to be elected from each of Chicago’s 22 police districts. They will make up local councils that will then select the members of a citywide police oversight commission.
Frank Chapman, chairman of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, says all of this is the first real step toward a decades-long goal of his.
But Chapman is not happy that the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 is running its own candidates. He said the FOP’s selections, if elected, would undermine the ordinance and the commission.
He said the best way to defeat the FOP’s effort is at the ballot box. But Chapman admits not enough people know about the elections. Some districts don’t even have three people running.
