(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A K-9 officer in the Gary Police Department was killed Thursday in a shooting during a foot chase, officials said.
The German shepherd named Falco and its handler had stopped a car on 35th Court today when someone in the car ran away. As the officers gave chase, police say the suspect started shooting and struck the animal.
Falco had been part of the Gary police department for eight years.
The dog’s human partner was not hurt.
Police have arrested a suspect.
Lake County sheriff's investigators are handling the investigation.
