(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An investigation is underway after police officers fatally shot a man who they said was wielding a sledgehammer in Round Lake Beach Wednesday afternoon.
Officers responded about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to a home Redwood and Eagle Creek Drives, where they found two female victims in a garage with blunt force injuries to their faces and heads, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. Both women were hospitalized.
“Both sustained serious facial and head wounds, and after bringing them to safety, [officers] attempted to make contact with the offender,” Covelli said.
The sheriff’s office said when officers arrived at the front door of the home, the adult male suspect was inside the doorway and was armed with a sledgehammer. Covelli said the man refused to drop the sledgehammer and lunged toward officers, at which point one officer used a Taser to try and subdue him.
“However, the man continued to aggressively move toward them, gripped the hammer, started to raise it with two hands and approached an officer,” said Covelli. “At least one of the other Round Lake Beach police officers fired at the man at that time.”
Covelli said the man was taken to the hospital and later died of his injuries.
Three Round Lake Beach police officers were also hospitalized for evaluation, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is investigating the shooting.
