(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Merrillville Police are trying to clear up some misinformation being spread on social media regarding busloads of migrants.
A statement from the Merrillville Police Department said, it “has received numerous inquiries and observed various social media posts regarding alleged bus arrivals of illegal immigrants.”
It said the department “has not verified any information indicating” this has occurred.
It goes on to say that “many of the images circulating on social media have either been doctored or depict agricultural buses transporting migrant workers who are legally here on temporary work visas.”
The statement adds that police have encountered individuals from Central and South America, India and the Middle East, who were either panhandling or setting up small encampments. And says there are websites that incorrectly say that Merrillville and Lake County are sanctuary areas.
They’re trying to address that.
“We are actively working with state officials to address the situation and ensure these non-governmental websites stop posting false information.”
