Poll reveals many Illinoisans concerned about pandemic's effects on education

Classroom amid COVID-19

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An annual survey by the Illinois Education Association suggests people are worried about the future.

The poll suggests people are worried about the current shortage of teachers and are concerned that the pandemic is only going to make things worse.

According to the Illinois Education Association, 1,000 Illinois residents were asked their thoughts on the state of education.

Among the findings, there is concern about student performance; that standards for teachers will have to be lowered; that classrooms will get more crowded; and that taxes will go up, because districts will have to pay more to retain teachers.

IEA President Kathi Griffin said there was a spike in teachers leaving the profession last summer and fall, and today, one in four teachers is considering retirement.

"We must do something to stop damage this pandemic is causing," she said.
