Governor J.B. Pritzker and one of his main Republican challengers are talking about the fatal shooting by ICE agents of a woman in Minneapolis, in the latest incident of violence surrounding the Trump Administration's immigration enforcement.
The governor addressed the shooting of Renee Good before a bill-signing ceremony in Joliet Thursday morning, offering condolences to her family and encouraging people to watch the video that's been shared online of the encounter.
"It should anger you. It angers me. It should compel you to peacefully stand up for justice. It's time for (Homeland Security secretary) Kristi Noem to go," Gov. Pritzker said to applause from supporters at Joliet Junior College, 1215 Houbolt Rd.
"These agents are not being deployed to promote safety," the governor continued. "They do not have the proper training. They don't belong on the streets when they're not willing to follow the law."
Less than an hour before the governor made his comments, Republican challenger Darren Bailey told reporters at a campaign event in Springfield that it breaks his heart every time there's a loss of life.
"None of this should be happening," said the former state Senator and 2022 candidate for governor, "if state government would be upholding the law. If we were doing this in Illinois, if they were doing this in Minnesota, the federal government would have no reason to be there."
Speaking outside the door to the governor's office at the state Capitol, Bailey continued: "The law needs to be upheld, and if J.B. Pritzker would had been doing that the last three, four, seven years, we would have no need of the federal government here in Illinois or any other state for that matter."
