(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign a bill that would potentially open gunmakers up to more lawsuits.
Sponsors say the bill would put gun makers on equal footing with other industries under the federal Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
State Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, D-Glenview, said a local manufacturer is appealing to kids with special colors and cartoon characters on the weapons.
Her proposal would remove any exemption gun manufacturers have from lawsuits by people injured in the misuse of their products, she said.
Richard Pearson, head of the Illinois State Rifle Association, calls the bill vague. He believes the goal of such a law would be to bankrupt gunmakers with lawsuits.
He predicts the bill, if signed into law, would not survive court challenges.
