Pritzker says American flags will remain at half-staff for COVID victims – for now

American flag flying half-staff

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Governor Pritzker said he is considering how much longer his order to fly the American Flag at half-staff will continue for COVID-19 victims; but he doesn’t seem ready to end it just yet.

Some elected officials and others have suggested lowering the flag to honor those who’ve died of COVID-19 has run its course, especially with vaccines being administered widely and the numbers of new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths have come way down.

Speaking at the United Center mass vaccination site, Governor Pritzker admitted people have a point, and the issue is being discussed. But, his point is, there’s a reason behind the continuing gesture.

"I want to make sure, whether it is the flag or in some other ways, that we do remind people that this pandemic is not over yet. We are going to be in this for months," Pritzker said.

Still, the Governor said, he believe the flag should also be lowered to honor veterans and others who’ve given their lives. So, he is thinking about the issue.
