Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Wednesday defended his decision to put a hold on fall high school sports like football, over the objections of parent demonstrators and the Illinois High School Association.
Pritzker said he was simply following the science.
“I understand there are other states that have made different decisions. That’s one of the tragedies of not having a national strategy, or being led by a president or a CDC that you can trust that’s providing some direction for everybody,” said the Democratic governor, who has locked horns with Republican President Donald Trump over his handling of the pandemic.
“But what I can tell you is that one of the reasons Illinois has the lowest positivity rate among all of our neighboring states is because we’ve been very careful. Because we’ve listened to the scientists,” Pritzker said.
Illinois state health officials on Wednesday reported 1,941 new Covid cases and 35 deaths. The statewide positivity rate is at 3.7%.
