CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Governor Pritzker joined members of the Illinois National Guard to recognize the sacrifices of mothers who have lost children in the armed forces on National Gold Star Mother’s Day.
“While I can never truly know your pain, here’s what I do know; you all who have dedicated yourselves to carrying on the work and the memory of your loved ones are the very, very best of us,” said Governor Pritzker.
Gold Star Mother’s Day calls on Americans to publicly express their love, sorrow, and reverence towards Gold Star Mothers and their families.
Official observance began in 1936, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the last Sunday in September.
“No one understands the true price of freedom like our Gold Star mothers, whose humility and service to community truly are inspirational to us all,” Pritzker said.
The ceremony concluded with Governor Pritzker handing out Gold Star banners to mothers in attendance at the Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial in Marseilles.
